Question

Are we free to follow Quraan and Hadith without following a particular mazhab?

Answer

It can only be done by a Mujtahid. Such kind of personalities are not available nowadays. So you are bound to follow one of the four Mazhabs. In Mauritius the predominant mazhab is Hanafi, so we should follow it. The level of Ijtihaad enabling one to become a Mujtahid is so high that prominent Ulama in the field of Tafseer and Hadith like Allaamah Qurtubi, Allaamah Jalaaluddin Suyutee, Allaamah Ibnul Hummaam, Allaamah Badruddeen Ainee and Allaamah Ibne Hajr Asqalaani etc. (Rahmatullahi Alaihim) were unable to attain it. Everyone of these prominent Ulama could not find any way to follow deen besides following a specific Mazhab. So they were either Hanafi, Shafi'ee, Maaliki or Hanbali.
