Question

Please clarify the sunnat way of clipping the nails.

Answer

The fuqaha (jurists) have ruled that it is mustahab to clip the nails starting with the index finger of the right hand up to the little finger of the left had and ending with the thumb of the right hand. (Shaami) Although there's no hadith to that effect, it is clear that it is derived from the hadith that encourages one to start any good act with the right. Furthermore, the position of the hands while making duas seem to be the best one and the best finger to start with seems to be the index finger which is lifted in tashahhud also. Thus, the first best finger on the right while making dua is the index finger. This may elucidate the reason why the fuqaha mention this manner of clipping the nails. Although this practice isn't sunnah, one would accrue rewards if one practices on it with the niyah of making amal on تيامن (starting with the right).
