Question
Aslm
I would like to know which brand of lamb is halal and where it is sold please?
Jazaakillah
Answer
Wa alaikumus salaam. Imported lamb/beef is classified as ''halal'' after a follow up on the halal certificate issued for each imported batch. As a matter of principle, importers should have a copy of the halal certificate for each batch imported and the following conditions should be respected:
(a)The reference number on the products should match with the reference number on the halal certificate.
(b) The exportation date should also correspond
(c) the concerned halal organization should confirm the certification.
N.B. The above exercise should be repeated for each batch.
It is difficult to ascertain the brand of imported lamb/sheep when it is no longer in its labeled box as is the case in supermarkets or with food distributors. Therefore, one should undoubtedly refrain from buying such meat as the information provided with regards to the origin and halal status, is insufficient. In such cases, one should contact the importers directly and enquire as to where the meat is being supplied in the required location.
Before purchasing meat, you should ensure the following :
(a) The place where you are buying from is keen to show you a copy of the halal certificate for that particular batch.
(b) Cross check the reference number of the certificate with the reference number written on the packaging of the product.
(c) Forward a copy of the certificate to JUM who will contact the Halal Organization in that particular country to receive confirmation from them.
JUM approves the products only after having received a positive reply from the Halal Organization abroad.
N.B. To simplify and accelerate this type of halal approving process, it would be best if the importers would kindly cooperate with JUM in this regards.
