The amount of time that a widow must wait for her to be able to contract another Nikah

Question:

The husband of a woman passed away. How long must she wait for her to be able to contract another Nikah? Some people say that she should wait for a year. Is this true?

Reply:

A woman, whose husband has passed away, must observe Iddat before she can contract another Nikah. Her Iddat is 4 months and 10 days. Before that, she cannot do Nikah. Unless if she is pregnant, then in this case, she must wait till delivery which can be less than 4 months and 10 days just as it can be more. Iddat of 4 months and 10 days applies to a woman who is not pregnant. As for a pregnant woman, her Iddat will end as soon as she gives birth.
