Khutbah in another language?
Khutbah in another language besides Arabic is neither Fardh nor Waajib. But is it Sunnah or Mustahab? This is not difficult to pronounce. Is it Mubaah? That is, a practice for which one neither gets Sawaab for doing it nor sin for neglecting it. Here we will have two trends:
According to one trend, it is Mubaah. That is, it can be practiced. As justification, it is said that Khutbah is a message and a message must be in a language that people understand. So it "must" be done in the language of those concerned with this message. For example, in India it must be done in Urdu, in England in English, and in Mauritius in Creole.
We understand that one must transmit a message in a language which the people concerned understand. But is the message of Khutbah a message which should be understood? If it is a message that is obligatory to be understood, it means that it is obligatory to do it in a language that people understand. For example, in Mauritius one will have to do it in Creole! This reasoning does not correspond and it is not compatible with the declaration of this group saying that it is Mubaah because it is evident that 'obligatory' means that it will be a sin if it is not done. Moreover, it will lead us to say that it will be a sin to do it in Arabic in Mauritius. We do not think that anyone may have said that until now. And we do not see that anyone would have the audacity to say that in the future. At most, they may say that it is authorised. Normally, they have to give a justification for this authorisation also. And they only have one justification. As justification they may merely say that it is a good idea to present Khutbah in a language that people may understand. They cannot even categorise it as 'recommended' also. They cannot give it a higher degree than 'Mubaah'.
