Question

Is it bid'ah to ask someone for forgiveness before or in the day of shab-e-barat

Answer

In a Hadeeth, Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasullullah (Sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said “On the 15th of Shabaan Allah Ta’aala descends to the lowest heavens. He therefore, forgives everyone besides an idolator and one in whose heart there is hatred for others. (Baihaqi)

Considering the above mention Hadeeth, a person may ask for forgiveness to his brother on the 15th of Shabaan in order to solve their disputes etc. However, a person should not intentionally wait only for the 15th of Shabaan to ask for forgiveness by considering it as a particular Sunnah of this day, rather after a dispute happen, a person should not wait more than three days to speak to his brother. Abu Ayyub (radhiallahu ‘anhu) narrated that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “It is not permissible for a Muslim to forsake his brother for more than three days; when they meet they turn away from each other. The first to greet the other with salam is the better of the two.” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Note: To always ask for forgiveness is the habit of good and pious servants of Allah Ta’aala. One should not restrict it to the 15th of Shabaan only, instead one should always do it for Allah Ta’aala’s sake even though one is not at fault.

And Allah Ta’aala knows best.
