Question

Assalamualaikum.. My question is regarding zakaat for my wife and my daughter. My wife has 52g of 18K gold and 34g of 22K gold and has Rs 3,000 cash in hand.
My daughter has 27g of 18K gold, Rs 148,000 cash at bank and Rs 3,000 cash in hand. Is zakaat compulsory on them? If yes, how much and please provide a detailed calculation? Also, in these cases, do we have to convert the cash into its corresponding weight in gold to know whether one should take out zakaat. Example for my daughter: 27g of 18K gold equals to 20.25g of 24K gold (75% x 27g). Cash: Rs 151,000/5860 (value of 24K gold for 2026)= 25.76g of 24K gold. Total: 20.25 + 25.76 = 46.01g. I want to know if this is the way to do the calculations. Jazak Allah

Answer

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

Zakat becomes compulsory exactly one lunar year after a person first becomes the owner of ‘zakatable’ assets (such as money, gold, silver, merchandise, etc.) equivalent to or more than the Nisaab (value of 612.36 grams of silver). Thereafter, Zakat will be compulsory on the zakatable assets that he possesses on the same date every lunar year if his zakatable assets are equal to or above the Nisaab.

If a person does not know his zakat date, he should estimate it. If he cannot remember at all, he should set a new Islamic date for future years.

It should be noted that the value of silver and gold keeps on changing. Since you didn't mention the zakat date of your wife and daughter, we will calculate the zakat according to today's rate (20 April 2026). Once you understand the method of calculating zakat, you can calculate it again according to the rate of your family's zakat date. If it's difficult for you to find the rate at that time, you can give zakat on the value we calculated.

The price of one gram of gold for 18 K is Rs 4134.548 and for 22K is Rs 5387.692

Zakat Calculation (Wife):

The value of 52g of 18K gold is Rs 214 996 and the value of 34g of 22K gold is
Rs 183 182. Total value of gold is Rs 398 178. You wife has Rs 3000 cash, which makes a total of Rs 401 178. Since Rs 401 178 exceeds the nisaab of zakat (which is Rs 107 641), zakat will be compulsory on your wife. She should pay (2.5% of Rs 401 178) Rs 10 029.45

Zakat Calculation (daughter):

The value of 27g of 18K gold is Rs 111 632.796 Total cash: Rs 151 000. This makes a total of Rs 262 632.796

Since Rs 262 632.796 exceeds the nisaab of zakat (which is Rs 107 641), zakat will be compulsory on your daughter. She should pay (2.5% of Rs 262 632.796) Rs 6 566

Regarding your last question, the weight of gold is not considered unless a person does not have any zakatable assets besides gold, then only he will consider the weight of gold. If the weight of his gold is equals to or above the nisab of gold (87.48 gram), regardless of it being 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats zakat will be waajib on him according to the value of its purity.

And Allah knows best.
