Question

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

Respected Mufti Sahib,

I am a Hafiz of the Holy Qur’an. Currently, I am employed in a bank. My job does not involve dealing with interest (riba), loans, or any interest-based calculations.

Recently, the bank was penalized by the Central Bank for not completing certain regulatory compliance requirements. As a result, a project was created. My duty is limited to checking whether clients’ basic documents, such as their National Identity Card (NIC) and Proof of Address (POA), are updated. If any documents are missing or expired, a separate team contacts the clients to request updated documents.

I am not involved in any riba transactions or financial dealings related to interest. My role is strictly administrative and related to document verification.

I humbly request guidance on the following:
1. If I lead Taraweeh Salah as an Imam, will my imamat be valid?

Kindly provide guidance in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah according to the Hanafi madhhab.

Jazakumullahu Khairan for your time and guidance.

Wassalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Answer

Wa'alaykumusalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakaatuh

Your imamat will be valid if you meet all the requirements of an Imam.

However, it is advisable for you to look for another job. Though your job is not directly related with interest, it is still a means granting the bank to continue impermissible transactions.
