Question

Are we allowed to adopt children in Islam? If yes, what are the conditions?

Answer

Yes adoption is allowed if the following conditions are taken into consideration. (1) If they are adopted without changing the name of their biological and legitimate father. (2) If they are not given rights to inheritance. (However the adopting parents may draw a will in favour of the adopted child to the extent of one third from their estate). (3) If the rules of pardah are observed. (i.e. in case of a male the adopting mother should make pardah from him and in case of a female, she should observe pardah from the adopting father etc) However rendering mahram can be achieved by breastfeeding within 2 years. For example if the child is a boy it should be fed by the daughter, sister or the niece of the adopting mother. In case of a girl feeding should be done by a mahram of the adopting father.
