SAJDAH TILAWAT

It is a Sajdah that becomes Waajib upon recitation of certain verses of the Qur'aan. There are 14 such instances in the Qur'aan. Each verse requires only one Sajdah. The recommended way is to stand up, say Allahu Akbar and go in Sajdah. After Sajdah, say Allahu Akbar again and stand up. If a person does it while sitting, it is also permissible.

Just as this Sajdah becomes Waajib by reciting these verses, it also becomes Waajib upon hearing it from someone. But it must be heard from a person directly. If it is heard from a radio, tape recorder or any other device, this does not necessitate a Sajdah.

He is not obliged to do the Sajdah immediately if the Ayat was recited out of Salaah. It can be performed later also, as long as it is not done during the forbidden time such as sunrise, sunset and at the time of zenith. Yes, if ever one recited these verses during these times, then in this case it will be allowed but it will be better to postpone it for later.

However, during the interval between Subh-e-Saadiq and sunrise and the interval between 'Assr and until the sun becomes yellowish, only Nafl Salaahs are forbidden. Thus, one can perform Sajdah Tilaawat as well as Qazaa Salaah.

Note that if a woman in Haiz or Nifaas hears verses that contain Sajdah Tilaawat, it does not become Waajib on her.
