Ask for forgiveness
Asking Allah Ta'ala for forgiveness is a very great 'Ibaadah. It is a practice that Allah Ta'ala appreciates a lot. It is an action that emanates from regret and remorse that a person experiences when he feels guilty. It is an Ibaadah which is filled with humility. Humility is something that Allah Ta'ala loves a lot. Thus, asking for forgiveness purifies a person and brings him close to Allah Ta'ala simultaneously.
Our elders went at length so as not to commit sins yet they were asking Allah Ta'ala for forgiveness after spending sleepless nights in 'Ibaadah. They were aware that they had not done sufficient Ibaadah, so they were asking for forgiveness for any shortcomings in regards to quantity and quality.
Today we are drowned in sin but we do not see the need to ask for forgiveness. This is because our heart is rusted with sins. If we do not ask for forgiveness, it is very probable that it will aggravate to such an extent that we can lose the Taufeeq and the will.
