I learnt/it came to my attention ...

During the time of the Abbasid Caliphate, there was a great Alim in Baghdad who had a high reputation and was highly regarded in the eyes of people.

Once, there was a conversation between him and a person.

The person: "Do you know what I heard concerning your friend?"

Aalim: "I will take a small exam from you: You have to answer three questions:

  1. Is what you are telling me the truth?

  2. Is it something good?

  3. Is it beneficial for me?"

The person: “To be honest, I did not verify this statement as I have heard it from someone else. And it is not a good statement and I do not think that it is beneficial for you.”

Aalim: "Why do you want me to waste my time listening to something: which is not true, not good and not beneficial?"

Allah says in Surah 49 Verse 6:

"O you who have Imaan! If any sinner brings you any news, then verify it, lest you should harm any nation unknowingly and then become remorseful over your actions"
