Khutbah in another language?

Khutbah in another language besides Arabic is neither Fardh nor Waajib. But is it Sunnah or Mustahab? This is not difficult to pronounce. Is it Mubaah? That is, a practice for which one neither gets Sawaab for doing it nor sin for neglecting it. Here we will have two trends:

The need to do Khutbah in another language besides Arabic?

There is no need to change the structure of Khutbah. What problem can arise by keeping it in the Arabic language? Without doubt, there is no problem. If an Ibaadah can be done in accordance with the principle and the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), then why should one change it and do it in another way? It is a way to be in conflict with the Mubarak Tareeqah of Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam).

The duration of the Khutbah of Jummah

The Khutbah of Jummah must be short rather than long. In the light of the Hadith, we see that it is not a Taqreer or a talk to deal with topics in detail. The language of Khutbah also has a particular style. Its language is not that of an ordinary talk. According to a Hadith of Abu Daawud, Hazrat Jabir (Radiyallahu Anhu) Bin Samurah (Radiyallahu Anhu) said, "Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) did not give long Khutbah on the day of Jummah.

Giving a speech before the Khutbah of Jummah

In practice, we give a speech before giving the Khutbah on the Mimbar on the day of Jummah. What is its ruling according to the Shariah? First of all, the Fuqaha did not make mention of this speech in the chapter in which they dealt with the principles and regulations concerning Salaat-ul-Jummah. If they did not mention it, it is because this speech is not included in Salaat-ul-Jummah nor is it a principle for that day. They drew our attention rather to Ghusl, Khutbah and Salaah.

The Khutbah of Jummah

The Khutbah of Jummah is not just a speech. Otherwise, we could have played a tape recorder which contains beautiful speeches on the Mimbar. People could have listened and benefited from it and that would have sufficed for the necessity of the Khutbah. But no one has authorised such a practice. This is a solid indication that it is not just a speech.

Delivering the Khutbah of Jummah while sitting?

According to a Hadith of Saheeh Muslim, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) entered the Masjid while Abdur Rahmaan Bin Ummul Hakam was delivering the Khutbah (Jummah) in the sitting posture. Upon this, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) said, "Look at this bad person! He is delivering the Khutbah in the sitting posture.
