Using Zakaat money to print newspapers

Question: Is it permissible to use Zakaat money to print newspapers or pamphlets which will be distributed free of charge?

Answer: It is not permissible to do such with Zakaat money as both the rich and the poor will benefit from this newspaper. Zakaat money should be used for the benefit of the poor only.

Zakaat

Zakaat is a fundamental pillar of Islam. When giving Zakaat, one must ensure that the person, to whom one is giving Zakaat, deserves Zakaat. If one is disposing Zakaat money to a person or a certain organisation or society, one must be assured that they know how to distribute Zakaat. Otherwise, one’s Zakaat will not be valid. As a general principle, it is to be noted that it is not permissible to give Zakaat money for the construction of a Masjid or Madrassah.

Zakaat is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. It is an Ibaadah that applies to the property or the wealth of a person. Literally speaking, it means purification, blessing, increase, appreciation etc.

Sending the Zakaat of one place to another

Answer: In principle, it is Makruh to send Zakaat of one place to another. When one says “from one place to another”, it does not merely mean from one country to another country. It also means from one place to another within the same country.

Richness according to the Shari’ah

There are three categories of rich people according to the Shari’ah. Firstly, there is a category of person who has all his necessities for a day. Such a person is also considered as a rich person in the sense that he does not have the right to beg for the next day. But if someone gives him without him asking or without him having hope or anticipating to get it from someone, then he has the right to take it.
