Sadaqah

HARAAM MONEY AND SADAQAH

Imam Sufyaan Ath-Thawri (Rahmatullahi 'alayh) says: "A person who spends Haraam money for something good is like a person who is cleaning a cloth with urine."

It goes without saying that this garment will become dirtier. So, the money that was acquired in a Haraam way such as lottery, cannot be purified by giving part of it in Sadaqah.

Sadaqat-ul-Fitr

Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is a Sadaqah (charity) of a certain amount of food or its equivalent that becomes Wajib at the time of Subh Saadiq on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

This Sadaqah is obligatory on a Muslim who is mature and has the means. In this context, a person who has the means, refers to a person who possesses 200 dirham or 620 to 630 grams of silver or their equivalent in cash or in anything which is more than his basic needs and necessities.

One is not allowed to ask

It is better to ask than to steal. This statement is correct in its context but asking also is a disgrace if it is done without any necessity. According to the Shari'ah, it is not permissible to ask if one has sufficient to satisfy one's needs for a day. Likewise, it is not allowed to give such a person when he asks because it will be an encouragement to do that which is not allowed. On the day of Qiyaamah, there will be people who will be presented with faces without flesh. They are people who ask without being in need.

Sadaqah

One offers someone something that he needs. One gives it solely for the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala. One does not expect anything from him in return. This is called Sadaqah.

The principle concerning giving

When you give something to someone, you should give it with sincerity solely for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. You should give from something which is Halal. You should choose good things to give. You should not just choose scrap to give away.

Working to give Sadaqah

لان ياخذ احدكم حبله فياتى بحزمة حطب على ظهره فيبيعها فيكف الله بها وجهه خير له من ان يسال الناس اعطوه او منعوه (البخارى)

“For a person to take a rope and carry a bundle of wood on his back to sell them and through that, Allah Ta’ala protects his dignity, [this] is better for him than begging people who may give him or may refuse to give him.” (Bukhari)

A distinct calculation

We have two systems of calculation. One is in the Dunya and another which concerns Allah Ta’ala. If we use a sum from a certain source that we possess, without doubt that sum will not remain the same. It will decrease until it may become exhausted. But the treasure of Allah Ta’ala is such a treasure that firstly, we will not be able to know its depth. Secondly, it never diminishes nor increases. And thirdly, it will never be exhausted. In the Qur'an-e-Kareem, Allah Ta’ala says:
