Hajj-e-Akbar

Hajj-e-Akbar or the biggest Hajj is something regarding which there is difference of opinion among the 'Ulama. According to the prevailing opinion, it is the Hajj that Nabi (Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam) had accomplished. According to Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbaas (Radiyallahu Anhu), Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) and Hazrat Abdullah Bin Zubair (Radiyallahu Anhu), it is a Hajj whose Wuquf-e-'Arafah falls on a Friday.

For the sake of Rasulullah (Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam)

It has been mentioned in a book called Al-Musaamaraat that a person had decided to perform Hajj. Thus, he took 1000 Dinaar to make preparation. On the way, a woman met him and told him that he was a descendant of Nabi (Sallalaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and that she was in need. Thus, the person gave this woman everything he had in his possession. When the Hajis returned home, everyone whom he met, was telling him:

تقبل الله منك

An examination

A person came to Bishr Bin Al-Haarith (Rahmatullahi alayh) and expressed his intention to perform Hadj. When Bishr (Rahmatullahi alayh) questioned him, he said that he has saved 2000 Dirham for this project. Bishr (Rahmatullahi alayh) asked him: "What is your aim of going to perform Haj? Are you doing this to express your piety or due to your ardent love for the Ka’bah or to seek the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala?" He said that he is doing it for the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala.

Sadaqah or Nafl Hajj

Initially, Imam Abu Hanifah (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) held the opinion that giving Sadaqah was better than performing a Nafl Hajj. According to the Ulama, what is meant here is that giving the sum that a person would spend in Nafl Hajj in charity is better than performing a Nafl Hajj itself. However, when Imam Abu Hanîfah (Rahmatullaahi Alayh) performed Hajj, he underwent through the difficulties in the journey. Upon completion of the Hajj, he changed his mind and issued a fatwa in favour of the superiority of performing a Nafl Hajj over giving Sadaqah.
