Sins

REFRAINING FROM COMMITTING SINS

The statement that says: “No one is perfect on earth”, is very true but requires a rectification. This means that besides the Prophets (Alaihimus Salaam) who were protected by Allah Ta’ala from sins, everyone can commit mistakes.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) said in a Hadith: "Every Insaan commits mistakes." (Tirmizi and Ibn Majah)

Zulm or injustice

When a person deserves something, it should be given to him. Not giving a person what he deserves is labelled as Zulm. A person who does Zulm is called a Zaalim and the person who bears Zulm is called a Mazlum. A Zaalim will be held into account by Allah Ta’ala and remains under the wrath of Allah Ta’ala throughout his life as long as he does not stop making Zulm. When the heart of a Mazlum (oppressed) is hurt, there is no barrier between him and Allah Ta’ala. That is, Allah accepts his supplication and takes action against the Zaalim.

Harmful effects of gunaah

  1. When a person commits a gunaah, he is deprived of the knowledge of Deen as the knowledge of Deen is an internal light which is extinguished in the presence of sins.

  2. Sustenance is decreased and there is no Barakah in food. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

"A person is deprived of food due to a gunaah which he is committing." (Ahmad)

ALLAH TA’ALA DECLARES WAR

There are two sins for which Allah Ta’ala declares war against those who commit them:

  1. Interest (2) Having grudge for the friends of Allah.

1. Allah said:

"If you do not (avoid interest), then be warned of war from Allah and His Rasul (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) ..." (S2: V 279)

Riya

Riya is that character that makes a person perform an action to show off. He does this to get honour in the eyes of people or for people to flatter him. When Riya comes into an Ibaadah or any task, then it loses its entire worth. It is like a small spark that can transform a beautiful castle into ashes. The success of any task that we undertake – big or small, lies in doing it with Ikhlaas. By the same token, our misfortune lies in Riya. With Ikhlaas, a small action also appears great and with Riya, even a great task appears like nothing.

Jealousy

Jealousy is an evil quality that casts a person in lowliness. A person who has jealousy is disliked by everyone in the society. Under the influence of jealousy, he acts in a certain way that he should not, merely for his personal comfort. Sometimes, he achieves his goal but his plan eventually fails and he becomes undesirable for eternity. The easiest way to become undesirable in the eyes of people and Allah Ta’ala, is to act under the influence of jealousy.

"BACK TO SQUARE ONE"

You can progress a lot through a meagre salary if you know how to control your expenses. Similarly, you can progress a lot spiritually with a little supplementary Ibaadah if you refrain from sins. You do not have to do a lot of supplementary Ibaadaat to become a good person. Not committing sins has a better effect on the behaviour of a person than doing supplementary Ibaadaat.
