Taraweeh - Questions & Answers

Question: How many Rak’at are there in Taraweeh?

Answer: There are 20 Rak’at in Taraweeh. According to a Hadith narrated by Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radiyallahu Anhuma), Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam) was performing 20 Rak’at and Witr during the month of Ramadhan. (Al Baihaqi/Mousannaf Bin Abu Shaibah /Tibrani)

SALAFI AND 20 RAK'AAT OF TARAWEEH

Salaf are the Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (Radiyallahu Anhum), Taabi'in and Tabi Taabi'in. To be Salafi means to follow the principles of those who lived in these three eras. We all know that the Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (Radiyallahu Anhum) agreed upon 20 Rak'aat of Taraweeh and this continued to be practiced during the eras of the Taabi'in and Tabi Taabi'in.

Status of the practice of the Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (Radiyallahu Anhum)

What Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has declared is termed as Hadith Qawli. What Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has practiced is termed as Hadith Fei'li. What he neither practiced nor declared, but it took place in front of him yet he did not disapprove of it, is also considered as Hadith. This type of Hadith is termed as Hadith Taqreeri.

The real blind

We know that a person is blind when he does not see. But the real blind person is the one whose heart is blind. We ask the protection of Allah Ta’ala against this kind of blindness because a person is completely ruined when he is such.

Taraweeh

Q: How many Rak'aats of Taraweeh are there?

A: There are 20 Rak'aats of Taraweeh. According to a Hadith reported by Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbaas (Radiyallalu Anhu), Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) was performing 20 Rak'aats in addition to Witr during the month of Ramadhaan. (Al-Baihaqi, Musannaf Bin Abu Shaibah, Tabraani)

The Salafi and 20 Rak'ats of Taraweeh

The Salaf are the Sahabah-e-Kiraam (Radiyallahu Anhum), the Taabi’een and the Tabi Taabi’een. To be a Salafi means to follow the principles of those who lived in these three epochs. We all know that the Sahabah-e-Kiraam (Raiyallahu Anhum) were unanimous on 20 Rak’at of Taraweeh and this practice continued in the epoch of the Taabi’een and the Tabi Taabi’een. Now, if a person claims to be a Salafi without accepting the 20 Rak’at of Taraweeh, this will look very surprising. The name “Salafi” does not suit him. This is a false claim.
