Ramadhaan

What we should know concerning Sehri

  • Sehri is the meal that the Muslims partake before dawn in order to fast.

  • There are many virtues and benefits in Sehri:

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Partake of Sehri as there is Barakah (blessings) in Sehri." (Bukhari/Muslim)

THE MONTH OF RAMADHAN

Ramadhan:

  • It is an opportunity to catch up on the delay that occurred during the eleven months.

  • It is an opportunity to remove the rust that got on the heart by committing sins.

  • It is a way to recharge the battery of Imaan of the heart that has been weakened for eleven months.

The fast of a person who wakes up after the time of Sehri has ended

Normally, before going to bed at night, a person already has the intention to fast the following day. If he was not able to wake up in time for Sehri and woke up past that time, he must not eat and drink because he is already in the state of fasting. It is Sunnah to have Sehri prior to fasting. However, it is not obligatory to do so, although it is not good to fast without having Sehri. So if someone did not wake up and did not have time to have Sehri, his fast is valid.

The gravity of missing a fast of Ramadhan without any valid reason

Roza is Farz (obligatory) on every Muslim who is major and sane. A person should not neglect his fast without any valid reason because it is a grave sin to miss a fast without any valid reason.

KAFFAARAH OF ROZA

A person, who has nullified his Roza due to having intimate relation, must give a Kaffaarah and replace that Roza which he has invalidated. Kaffaarah means to free a slave. Since there is no system of slavery nowadays, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he does not have the capacity to do so, he must give the value of one Fitrah to 60 poor persons individually.

Roza during pregnancy

When a woman is pregnant and she fears that the condition of her baby will be affected if she fasts, then she is allowed not to fast. That is, this is a valid reason according to the Shar’iah which allows her not to fast during the month of Ramadhan and she will not get any sin.

Gravity of missing a Fast without a valid reason

There are many parents who prevent and discourage their children from fasting during the exam period, which is very grave. This is because according to the Shari’ah, a Muslim who is sane and major, MUST fast. Without a valid reason, it is not permissible to even miss a fast. Missing a fast without any valid reason is a Kabeerah Gunnah (great sin).
